The microgenetic model presented by Hanlon et al. (1990) states that the cognitive process (language) unfolds in a unidirectional (bottom-up) progression traversing- distributed levels and cognitive stages in a manner that recapitulates the course of forebrain evolution. In particular, for language processing, this model suggests that the aphasic patient´s use of the contralateral shoulder to point to a picture to, be named will facilitate naming since this type of gesture will activate inhibited levels of language in the left hemisphere. In other words, the gesture will stimulate these levels.
