Finally, the syntactic comprehension impairment that has been found among agrammatic aphasics also has been found among some patients whose speech is best characterized as paragrammatic (Caramazza, Berndt, & Basili, 1983; Martin & Blossom-Stach, 1986). The agrammatism/paragrammatism distinction has been criticized on a variety of other grounds (Heeschen, 1985; Heeschen & Kolk, 1988), including even its historical adequacy. DeBleser (1987) has translated a number of papers from the early German aphasia literature demonstrating clear appreciation for the considerable overlap of omission and substitution symptoms even within the same patient.
