Writing the word to dictation amounts-to practising the task on which the patient is impaired-a method that may indeed be helpful (as suggested by the studies of our own cases), but that is explicitly rejected by the authors. Perhaps highlighting the errors differentiates the task from practice, but it is difficult to see how this intervention is motivated by assuming damage to the orthographic output lexicon. It might call attention to the errors and make them less likely to occur on future attempts, irrespective of the locus of damage in the spelling system.
