Memory that is context-free, reflecting general knowledge of symbols, concepts, and the rules for manipulating them. Context |
Although patients may rely on priming during the initial stages of learning, with sufficient repetition they seem able to establish representations in declarative or semantic memory. This latter observation is hardly surprising with respect to the sentence task that we used, which almost surely involves some semantic elaborative processing beyond a perceptual level. The Butters et al. experiment confirms the importance of degree of original learning for transfer, but cannot account for the differences in transfer between Shimmer and Squire´s experiments and those of Glisky et al. (1989a;b).
