Context |
In order to do that it must contain stored descriptions (or ´representations´) of the spoken forms of words known to the listener. If the input received from auditory analysis matches one of the stored descriptions in the auditory input lexicon, then a portion of the speech wave will be known to be familiar. At the stage of the auditory input lexicon the listener does not yet know the meaning of the word. For comprehension to be complete, the representation of a word´s meaning must be activated within the semantic system. Psychologists know very little about how word meanings are represented (see Garnham, 1985), but representations of some sort there must be.
