Definition Freely movable articulation. Also a freely movable joint
Definition source Gould-Chiampo, 1988.
Context There are many types of synovial joints, but there are certain characteristics that they share: articular cartilage on the ends (surfaces) of the bones, joint capsule enclosing a joint cavity, synovial membrane lining the inside of the joint capsule and producing synovial fluid contained within the joint cavity. There is a very small volume of fluid that aids in lubrication and protection of joint structures associated ligaments - these may be a thickening of the joint capsule (capsular), or they may be separate structures lying within the joint cavity (intracapsular), or structures outside the capsule and separated from it (extracapsular).
