        | Definition |
Some dialytic cyclers have an additional function whereby after the initial inflow, not all the fluid is allowed to drain. The subsequent inflow volumes are correspondingly reduced and after a preset number of cycles complete drainage occurs. Therefore, for a period some of the dialysate remains in the abdomen. This technique is called tidal PD *Tidal Peritoneal Dialysis (TPD)*. TPD can lead to an increase in clearance by 10 to 40 per cent. This is achieved with a portion of dialysate being drained and then replaced by fresh peritoneal-dialysis fluid with each cycle. The majority of the dialysate is in constant contact with the peritoneal membrane until the end of the dialysis *Tidal Peritoneal Dialysis*. Tidal peritoneal dialysis consists of the repeated installation of small tidal volumes of dialysis fluids with the use of an automated cycler. The procedure is usually performed nightly (NTPD)

Tidal PD, in which a constant reserve volume of dialysis fluid remains in the peritoneal cavity, on top of which a tidal volume of dialysis solution is exchanged, is theoretically better, but results have been disappointing in practice
