Definition |
An abnormally high plasma concentration of sodium ions The countercurrent mechanism of the kidneys, which allows for urinary concentration and dilution, acts in concert with the hypothalamic osmoreceptors via vasopressin secretion to maintain a finely tuned balance of water and to keep serum Na+ and serum tonicity within a narrow range. A defect in the urine-diluting capacity when coupled with excess water intake leads to hyponatremia. Hypernatremia occurs when defects in urinary concentrating ability are not accompanied by adequate water intake
