Definition |
Acute renal failure (ARF) is a clinical syndrome characterized by an abrupt decline in glomerular filtration rate (GFR) and the accumulation of nitrogenos waste (urea nitrogen and creatinine ) The term ARF is used when the decrease in GFR occurs relatively rapidly, over the coures of days to weeks The diagnosis of renal failure is usually made when the plasma concentration of urea or creatinine is measured and found to be elevated; it cannot reliably be made on clinical grounds alone. Acute, as opposed to chronic, renal failure is diagnosed when the decline in renal excretory function and increase in plasma urea and creatinine concentrations occur over hours or days
