Part of speech Adjective
Variant Port side, port-side.
Phraseology
To port: “Inside the cabin, you’ll find a bucket seat to port, a bench to starboard, a berth large enough for two and a stainless-steel sink.” RrecK167

Definition The name of the left-hand side of a vessel as viewed from aft.
Definition source RgloK668
Context While most builders place rear cabins under the helm seats - a design that wouldn’t work on a 24-footer - Chaparral’s designers tucked a full-length two-person bunk under the port gunwale and lounge seat.

Note

The name owes its derivation to the fact that the old-fashioned merchant ships had a loading port on their left-hand sides, and later war ships had their entry port on that side. RgloK668 The name “port” derives from the fact that steering was originally done from the right-hand side of the boat (see starboard), so the other side was put to the dock or “port”. IinfK619
