A vertical or near vertical piece of timber (or metal on metal boats) forming the very end of the stern of a vessel and shaped to cut through water cleanly.
The stern is the after end of a vessel, generally accepted as that part of the vessel built around the sternpost, the aftermost timber of wooden ships.
