This is a metal gang-hook anchor that sports four to six upward-sweeping claws. It has no value on soft bottoms but is excellent on rocky bottoms, as the claws readily catch onto objects. Grapnels are of moderate weight and are manufactured in small versions that serve backup duty or are used to scour the bottom for dropped equipment. Grapnels can get seriously hooked on the bottom, becoming impossible to retrieve. This potential problem can be avoided by attaching a trip line to the bottom of the anchor so it can be overturned. They are slightly bulky for small-boat storage, and the many hooks have a way of snagging things in the boat as well as rubbing against the boat.
This style of anchor works much like a grappling hook. It takes hold of debris or rocks at the bottom. It is ineffective on muddy or sandy bottoms but works fairly well out at the jetties. Be prepared to loose this anchor though.
