Definition |
This anchor has excellent structural strength, but does not penetrate as deeply into the seabed and/or has less holding power per pound than a fluke-style anchor. This device, which is newer than many of the designs described here, sports a broadhead-like blade and a design that rights the anchor and causes the blade to furrow into the bottom, eventually burying itself if the bottom is soft enough. It has application over diverse bottoms and is especially good in sand and moderate grass. Some versions have a shank that pivots, which reduces the tendency of the anchor to pull out when there´s a sharp change in the angle of pull. These anchors range from 15-pounders, for 25-foot boats, up to 60-pounders. Because they´re large, they are hard to store in bow anchor compartments with limited space. For this reason, some boaters fasten them securely to a bow roller.

Context |
In general, plows make effective all-around anchors, good in mud and sand; I have found the Bruce to also be quite effective in coral. Any plow anchor is likely to have trouble getting to the bottom if there is a lot of kelp.
