Valve, usually of the poppet type and smaller than the inlet valve, in four-stroke IC engines, operated directly or indirectly by a camshaft to open during the exhaust stroke to allow the combustion gases to escape.
During this cycle the inlet valve opens to allow the cylinder to be filled with charge, after which it closes and, likewise, the exhaust valve opens to expel the burnt gases and then closes.
