An air pump or blower in the intake system of an internal combustion engine used to increase the weight of air charge and consequent power output from a given engine size.
An increase of torque and power is not required when driving steadily under part load conditions but, nevertheless, the supercharger still needs power to drive it proportional to the engine speed.
