Electron emission due to a very hot electrode assists the HT ignition coil in establishing the spark between the electrodes, whereas if the polarities of the electrodes were reversed so that the central electrode now had a positive potential, the electron flow would try to oppose the formation of a spark and a much higher voltage would then be required to produce the spark.
