Definition |
Set of the parts of the engine connected to the piston by connecting rods which converts the reciprocating or up-and-down motion of the pistons into rotary motion used to provide the drive to the wheels via the clutch and transmission. From the front edge of the crankshaft are driven the camshaft (via a chain, cogged belt or timing gear) and the alternator or dynamo (via a belt which may also drive the fan and water pump).

Context |
The amount the engine speed fluctuates due to a change in engine load is determined by how quickly and accurately the control-rod can move to its newly programmed position. Other factors are the time it takes for the engine´s cylinders to react to different fuel delivery inputs, the flywheel energy absorption and the release effect created by the total rotating inertia of the crankshaft assembly, and any internal and external equipment driven directly by the engine.
