Definition |
Osteoporosis is a common and important complication in older thalassaemics, that is not obviously related to iron overload. It often becomes symptomatic in the late twenties, but starts much earlier. Diagnosis is by bone densitometry over the spine and hip. Osteoporosis seems to be related to many interacting factors: the following need to be considered in every case.
