Definition Making an RNA copy from a sequence of DNA (a gene). Transcription is the first step in gene expression. It consists in the synthesis of RNA by RNA polymerases using a DNA template.

Context In the adult, globin chain synthesis begins in the late basophilic erythroblast and is approximately 95% complete on denucleation and release from the marrow. The last 5% of globin chains are synthesized within the reticulocytes of the peripheral blood. Transcription of the hnRNA starts at the CAP site, spans the whole coding area (exons and introns), goes over the termination codon which will end the chain synthesis, and terminates approximately 200 bp downstream. On release, the hnRNA is processed into mature mRNA by splicing and addition of the poly-A tail, and is transported through the nuclear membrane into the cytoplasm by a complex mechanism.
