Definition A procedure for removing spinal fluid from the space that surrounds the spinal cord using a needle inserted through two vertebrae in the lower part of the back. Fluid samples drip out the needle when the obturatoris removed and are collected in sterile tubes and examined for evidence of leukemia or lymphoma. This technique can be used to administer anti-cancer drugs to either prevent or treat leukemia or lymphoma of the coverings of the central nervous system. The fluid removed is replaced with a solution of chemotherapy, usually cytarabine or methotrexate.
Lumbar puncture with cytospin morphologic analysis is performed before systemic chemotherapy is administered to assess the presence of CNS involvement and to administer intrathecal chemotherapy.
Lumbar puncture refers to a procedure in which a needle is inserted into the spinal canal for the purpose of obtaining a sample of cerebrospinal fluid for analysis; injecting medication into the cerebrospinal fluid, i.e., in Acute Lymphoid Leukemia;injecting radiographic contrast material for X-Ray imaging. Spinal canal is the space within the spine where the spinal cord is located. This procedure is normally done at bedside with the patient lying on his side. Local anesthetics are injected in the area in the lower back, where the needle has to be entered. After adequate anesthesia, a very thin needle is inserted into the space. The pressure of the fluid is measured by connecting a simple device to the needle. The cerebrospinal fluid is then collected from the needle end.

Context The remission induction rate was 93.1% with a 6-year EFS rate (+/- SE) of 68.7% +/- 2.4%, which is similar to historical results for patients who received their diagnostic lumbar puncture and first instillation of intrathecal chemotherapy on day 0.
