Variant complete remission
Definition The disappearance of all clinical evidence of disease in response to treatment.Unfortunately, this does not necessarily mean cure, as cancer cells may remain undetected, are likely to regrow and become resistant to treatment. Also called a complete response.
CR was defined as the absence of leukemic blasts in PB and CSF, less than 5% lymphoblasts in marrow aspiration smears, and no evidence of localized disease.
Complete remission (CR) was defined as no physical evidence of disease, no detectable leukemic blasts on blood smears, and less than 5% on BM smears, active hematopoesis, and normal cerebrospinal fluid (CSF).

Context The higher rate of CR is explained partly by a lower incidence of deaths during induction and partly by the lower rate of resistance to induction therapy, confirming that the introduction of an anthracycline as a fourth drug during induction therapy for all risk groups may be safe and beneficial.
