Worsted or carded fabric , generally cotton, silk or nylon, consisting of two layers of weft and warp, one of which brings to the surface a soft, lustrous pile, whose length, consistency and nap depend on the type of material and on the used working process.
The gold embroidered velvet forming the uppers of these mules was probably from India and the mules may have been made for a European living in India by an Indian craftsmen. Gilt heels were popular at this time and appear on all types of shoes for formal wear. They were made of wood covered in a thin layer of plaster and painted gold.
