Class of drugs which inhibit by a variety of mechanism, the slow inward current of calcium in cardiac and vascular smooth muscle cells. They therefore act as vasodilators by relaxing arterial smooth muscle.

Calcium channel blockers are effective as single-drug therapy in approximately 60% of patients and appear to be beneficial in all demographic groups and all grades of hypertension. As a result, they may be preferable to beta blockers and ACE inhibitors in black and older subjects.
