Pulmonary capillary pressure, measured at catheterization by wedging the cardiac catheter in the most distal pulmonary artery branch; it reflects mean left atrial pressure.
In some patients, however, chronic elevation of capillary pressure is accompanied by increased precapillary resistance. This phenomenon is characterized by a disproportionate increase in pulmonary capillary pressure compared with pulmonary capillary wedge pressure.
