A tumor of the sympathetic nervous system, found most often in the adrenal medulla, but occasionally in other sites such as paraganglia and in the thorax.
Additional diagnostic procedures may be indicated to seek causes of hypertension; for example labile hypertension or paroxysm of hypertension accompanied by headache, palpitations, pallor and perspiration suggest pheochromocytoma.
