Definition |
Drugs that act by blocking or inhibiting the postsynaptic alpha1 receptors on vascular smooth muscle. This inhibit the uptake of catecholamines by smooth muscle cells. Vasoconstriction is blunted, and peripheral vasodilation occurs.

Several trials have demonstrated that alpha1 blockers may have a favourable effect on lipid levels and reduce plasma insuline levels and improve glucose tolerance. Because of these possible advantages, it has been suggested that alpha1 blockers may be ideal antihypertensive agents.
