box which is used to support shafts, to contain lubricant and to fix gear units in their working points. Housings must be resistant as they must keep shafts rigidly in position, they must be hermetic in order to avoid any leakage of lubricant and equipped with carefully installed strong fasteners and support surfaces. Housings are made up of iron steel and sometimes of light alloys (aluminium), the latter having small dimensions and being obtained by means of die-casting (extrusion).
