A wedge-shaped piece of metal used as a grip device to hold the string of pipe in the well when it is not suspended from the travelling block and hook or elevators. It fits into the slip bowl of the rotary table.
Rotary slips are made with three or more segments of cast iron honeycomb that are hinged to fit around the pipe. The outer diameter of the rotary slips has an inward angle of about 9 1/2°.
