Attestation 3
Part of speech Noun
Grammatical label Uncountable
Definition Carbamide: carbonyldiamide; NH2-CO-NH2; carbonic acid, the chief end product of nitrogen metabolism in mammals, excreted in human urine in the amount of 32 gm a day, about 6/7 of the nitrogen excreted from the body. Urea is formed in the liver, by means of the Krebs-Henseleit cycle in which arginine and arginase play the key role.It occurs as colorless or white prismatic crystals, without odour but with a cooling saline taste, soluble in water; it forms salts with acids. It is used as a diuretic, in kidney function tests, and topically for various skin disorders
Urea is an easily diffusible solute that moves rapidly across cell membranes. Urea is highly polar and therefore water soluble and would not be expected to diffuse across cell membranes, however, urea moves rapidly between all aqueous body compartments. Urea is a breakdown product of protein metabolism and accounts for nearly all protein nitrogen elimination

Context Because of the above myriad variabilities, an alternative means of assessing dialysis adequacy by determining the total amount of urea or of other marker molecules retrievable from the spent dialysates has been proposed
