DES is an example of a single key or symmetric encryption system. A message is encoded and decoded using the same mathematical key. So long as only the sender and recipient know the key, the system is reasonably secure.
The system is sometimes called "private-key encryption" as well. It is important to underline, however, that the key used in this system is called "secret key".
