Definition |
Developed in 1978, the most popular and formerly one of the strongest public key crypto system uses the RSA algorithm (RSA being the acronym of its inventors: Rivest, Shamir and Adleman). An RSA key pair is created by multiplying two randomly chosen and very large (100+ digit) prime numbers to arrive at their product (the modulus) and working from there. The two prime numbers are used with the modulus to create the private and public keys.

Context |
The RSA system has proved contentious in a number of respects. Although much of the funding for the work was provided by the United States government the system is patented with the rights belonging to a private company RSA Data Security. Further, the mathematical algorithms underlying the system have been used as the basis for a rival system, PGP (Pretty Good Privacy) created by Phil Zimmerman.
