Definition |
The domain name system was developed in the early 1980s at the University of Wisconsin. The Internic was created in response to a project solicitation for an Internet administrator by the National Science Foundation (NSF) in 1992. NSF eventually awarded a contract effective January 1, 1993 to Network Solutions, Inc. (NSI), a corporation headquartered in northern Virginia. The contract, called the "NSF Cooperative Agreement," provided NSF funds to NSI and authorised NSI, through Internic, to be the registrar of nongeographic domain names, and to assign IP network numbers and Autonomous System Numbers.
